| | Wendell Berry was mentioned quite often at the conference, so I headed as soon as I could to B&N to see what they had.
Today I finished Fidelity, containing 5 short stories. I loved all of them, although I think "A Jonquil for Mary Penn" is my favorite - how does a man understand the heart of a woman so well? I love Berry's characters - the way he describes them makes them seem real and makes me wish I understood others as well as he does.
There's an underlying peacefulness and rootedness to the stories that appeals - he assumes covenant community and yet also sees it as something precious and fragile. I think I have a new favorite contemporary American author. I'm about to start The Memory of Old Jack and then I have Jayber Crow waiting on the top of the pile beside my nightstand. |
