Book Review

All Loves Excelling

I finished All Loves Excelling a few days ago, but needed time to digest it.

It's very well-written, with an almost poetic rhythm to it. The characters were well-drawn. There is much foreshadowing throughout, so I saw fairly early how it would end, but it was still quite sad when I got there.

I recommend it highly, but it isn't for the weak at heart. It would be especially challenging for those of us facing high school with our students (homeschoolers and private school teachers as well as parents of institutionally educated high school aged students, both in private and government schools).

The themes reinforced a number of things that came up at CiRCE: the importance of a right understanding of schola, i.e. learned leisure; the danger of the pressure we're liable to put on our students to perform for performance sake; the anxiety that's running rampant in our schools; and the lack of balance and attention to our students as people made in the image of God, instead of computers whose processing speed needs to be faster to jump through our hoops.

In light of Vigen Guroian's hopelessness regarding our current higher education institutions, this book was especially tragic. See Cindy's blog for more about what Vigen said.
